Hey guys! One of my best friends in the whurl, Kirk Larsen, finished his new album The Unkowable. Told through the eye of the time traveling soothsayer Pharmocalypse, the concept album tells the following story:

Long after the fall of organic life, four robot best friends lose contact with the psychic robot mainframe.
Pharmocalypse's The Unknowable tracks their pan-universal quest to discover what has happened.

I had a really great time working on this album cover, and Pharmocalypse's new release is super fun to listen to. I hope you like them both! You do. Admit it.

Album Cover: Dragon in the Grass

Did this last August, revised the album title font a little bit last night. I don't think this album is released yet, but Mystic Hero makes some pretty cool music. Some of these tracks are available on the 8bit collective.

I've just finished another album cover which will be up very soon, and I'm going to be working on one for Noisebox shortly. In the coming months I'm going to get back to animating and the games I've been putting off.

Hello, everyone. For a while there I was posting mostly over on drawed goods. I couldn't really keep up with all of the talented people who are much more devoted to their arts than I am, so this place should see (slightly) more activity.

A couple of weeks ago I did the header for Firebrand Boy's site, seen here:

Firebrand Boy makes really great chip jams. You should get into him as I have.

A few years ago I was doing some comics for the Drexel newspaper based on how absoutely terrifying it is interacting with members of the opposite sex (example). I've been thinking about adapting that into a game. Here's a work in progress shot, with no interface stuff.

It's going to be a quick time event game where you'll have to focus and pick your words in order to talk to the other person without scaring them off. I expect it to be stupid and I'm gettin' pretty beefed about it!

I did that a few weeks ago, I've been juggling that stuff with a few other projects and... other distractions. Here are some things I am working on, in order of how behind I am on them!

1. the game mentioned in the previous post on this blog, forever ago.
2. a project I don't want to divulge to much information about just yet
3. an album cover for my great bro's forthcoming album

Oh, and I made a tumblr! If you like miyazaki, video games, pixel art, glitch art, illustration, and good old-fashioned things, you should follow it.

I figured out some stuff this week, like the resolution I will likely work with and a possible design for the main character (who will not be revealed for some time). I was thinking about setting the game in Philly, hence the art museum, but I don't think I will do that in the end. I'd rather just set it in a generic city of my own imagining.

I also had a meeting about Stanley this week. I'm definitely not going to make the 3/1 launch date, but I think it should come out nicely. I'll keep you all posted.

I came up with a game concept that I was really into, and with a little help from my friend Aaron I'm fleshing it out into what I think could be a really cool, elegant, and reasonably executable game. I want it to be 8-bit because I'm in love with that aesthetic, so I'm going to start practicing pixel art with some tentative assets. I'm trying to manage my time a little bit more rigidly, and I'm making Monday my primary day to develop this idea. I'll try and post some little bits and previews without giving too much away.

HEY! dudes.

A while ago, via Audrey Kawasaki's blog, I stumbled upon gelaskins.com. They've got some pretty cool skins for laptops, iProducts, and video game consoles/handhelds. Pretty sweet! I thought my brother might like one of those for Christmas, so I looked around trying to find him one.

Then, of course, I noticed you could make them yourself. Holy eff.

I made four: an iPhone skin for my oldest brother, a DS skin for the next, and iPod skins for my two cousins. The only one I have a photo of is Car's DS, seen here:

In retrospect, I probably should have flipped the illustration on the frontpiece over. Furthermore I thought my bro had a black DS (surprises are hard). The inside just has a more subtle philly skyline, so as not to be distracting during play.

Anyway, that site is kind of fun! Someday when I care a little more about video games/have money for spending I will buy myself a new DS, and then maybe I will make myself a cover.

If anybody wanted one of these (especially one of art of mine that already exists) I might be willing to spend some time on it for cheaps.

Still truckin' along on Stanley! I'm actually animating now, but there are still a lot of little things I want to go back and fix. The 3/1 deadline will be tough but I want it bad.

About a year ago I came up with the idea for Hello Stanley, a series of animated shorts about an awkward dude! Then I made episode 1. I never got around to putting sound to it, but when I decided I wanted to keep making episodes recently I contacted my friends Chris and Melissa, and now it's finally done! Hey guys,

I've been feeling bad about the barrenness of this blog (not to be confused with the baroness, who incidentally is doing quite well). I finished the animatic for Hello Stanley episode 2 last week and am working on backgrounds now. Here's the start of the first one -- still a lot missing, and a lot more detail to be added to what's there. Notice how the perspective makes so much sense it's almost nonsensical. All joking aside, I'm not striving for perfection with these just yet. It's more important to me that I get these things done.

I don't think I mentioned in my last post that I have moved again, and I'm back in the rittenhouse/fitler square area. I'm loving it over here. I forgot to buy onions today and, rather than whining about how I won't have onions when I cook tonight, I'm just going to pop over to the corner store and pick a few up. I can do that now! It's rather pleasant, especially since I'm finding immense pleasure these days in eating as many fresh, home made meals as I can.

I don't know exactly when Hello Stanley 1 will be up, and 2 is still a ways away, but I hope to be able to unveil it soon.

Man, did you have awesome holidays? I had pretty good times. The only regret is I didn't get to hang out with my bros (not to be confused with my actual, familial bros) in our traditional style, nor nearly enough.

The other thing I didn't do much of was anything that I'd be able to post here. But guess what! Now you can see the freelance project I finished recently!

edit: I can't post this yet, apparently!

Man, that project took way longer than it should have and I can't say I love it. That being said, the client is happy and I have decided not to take on any more freelance in favor of doing more personal work. Please shower me with comments.

Halloween is perhaps my favorite holiday (though, I warn you, I may be filled with some sort of strange sweet joy during the Christmas season. And of course, let's not forget about that most glorious of holiday feasts, franksgiving).

Some years I feel like embracing my inner nerd (three years ago I dressed up as a japanese fox spirit -- the ladies were all over me. Trust me.), and this year was one of them. Enter Tombo!

The ever talented illustrator and flying haircuttress Kali Ciesemier is a real champ. She's also a teacher these days, which means that when she gives me an assignment, I'd damn-better-well-off-to-do the listening to and executing of that assignment. Or something. She's trying to get me to push those velvetty blacks, and I'm going to start doing that. I still need to push it a lot further, but here's a baby step.

Man. I had a great day yesterday. Everyone left nice comments on the blog. And to make things extra rad, I went to see a show:

awesome and spooky and hilarious

I first wanted to see this when I saw the poster, then even more when I found out that my friend Adrienne is in it. I went for opening night last night and will say that if you live in Philly and are interested in things generally spooky, it's worth your checking outs. It takes the form of a haunted house that viewers walk through in small groups to see monologues, musical numbers, video installation, a puppet show, and other performances.

There were a few things I wasn't that into, but they were outweighed by a spectacularly well designed set, radical puppets, awesome makeup and costumes, excellent acting, and a radstronomical moment with a pick axe. I felt bad for the other people because I have a habit of laughing when I find things awesome, and I hope I didn't hurt their experiences by doing so.

I thought I may have had something else to say, but I can't think of it. Have a rad day, my friends. I'm off to laundry town.

It has been thirteen days since my last blog post. I'ma do some rosaries or something. Or Roasteries. Roast chestnuts.

Well, I mentioned some big projects, even posted a preview. Those things are (!) still under construction. BUT I wanted to post a blog because everybody has ant pants about my lack of postages.

Did you know something nerdy about me? Every day I get a haiku e-mailed to me. The other day I was bored and decided to doot one up. Here it is, with half-assed COLOR!

Well, things are still a little crazy but I'm working on a new project. The first piece is well underway and going alright. I don't know if I'm quite pushing it far enough but I am doing a little bit of experimenting and trying my best with the colors (which I've only just started to lay down and will definitely change). It's going to be a fun project with some reader participation, so look forward to it when it arrives...

No, no, no no. This won't do. This just won't do one bit.

Did you guys notice that I didn't update for like, two whole Mondays? Oh, no no no. I bet you did notice. I bet you noticed and then you thought to yourself, "Oh, Diego hasn't updated. I hope he's OK. I hope he wasn't mauled by a troupe of circus bears on big balls with stars printed on them."

Good news: I wasn't. I a little bit wanted to be, but I wasn't. In reality I just moved to a new location (soon maybe I will update with pictures of my furry new roommates), started working, and did a number of other things.

You may also be discouraged to hear the following: I'm not going to do the comic for the Triangle anymore. "WHAT!?" You are probably thinking. But think it not! Not yet! Not until you hear that I'm not going to leave this blog high and dry. I'm going to update my website with its true form! AND! I'm going to post at least weekly artings of mine here. AND! I may continue to do the occasional How To Talk To Ladies here as I am inspired to (as I was just this past Saturday, so you need only wait!)!

I am a nerd over this band. I listen to them while I draw standing up with no shirt on. It's one of the most fun things I've done in a long time.

My favorite tracks are Jetpack Blues and Mermaid, but what appears to be an armorless Megaman poppin' wheelies makes the Blackout City visualization by far my favorite.

As you may know, I graduated from the prestigious Drexel University this June just past. As a result, I've been having to make some pretty serious life decisions. I decided to move to Brooklyn, then not to move to Brooklyn, and now I'm scrambling to find a job so that I can afford to live in the city and do lots of drawing.

To get away from all of those nasty stressors for a few days, my chum Aaron and I popped over to Baltimore to visit my muscular and talented friend Sam and his beautiful and also talented girlfriend Kali. They are gracious and elegant hosts, treating Aaron and I to sake, hours of fun with their rambunctious kitten, and a whole heap of prints because they are just that nice. It turns out Kali is even a master haircutswain, as my current cool-guy coif confirms. Unfortunately, it also outdates the above drawing.

Anyway males and she-gents, things have calmed down a tiny bit, and hopefully soon I'll be able to post some previews of the super-secret animation I've been working on. Enjoy your week!

On Saturday my friend Q and I went to rittenhouse and sat with our feet in the fountain. I saw some chalk in there, so we fished it out and drew a picture of a guy eating a hamburger and some clouds and a vine. Then we were bored and out of chalk, so we fished up some quarters, used them to buy more chalk, and went back. It was so great -- we gave statue lady a sweet tattoo and made the fountain man get sick. Then yesterday it was all rained away... So we can do it again!

Hey guys, sorry I didn't post yesterday. I haven't had time to do a comic for friday's triangle, but I'll try and whip something up to put on the blog. It's been such a crazy week but it's been really amazing -- a bunch of really great parties with really great people and just a touch of work on the side. I'm gonna have to hunker down after this week, but I'm really hoping to spend some quality time with my sketchbook soon so keep an eye out.

I guess I had been making some threats about this being the last Radstronomical, huh? Well, Mike Sands (the comics editor for the triangle) has invited me to keep sending in comics. They're only doing it once every two weeks over the summer, so I may only be doing that as well, but I'll do more if I have more free time than it seems like I will. I was really excited for the break that would follow Senior Project, but I accidentally already have a job interview and two side projects so it looks like things won't be slowing down quite as much as I expected.

Oh well! I guess I'll just have to get famous or something, right?

Our senior project review did not go well last week, so we were given a week to make improvements. Tomorrow is our second-chance presentation, so wish us well. We have come an immeasurably long way since last week, but you should still wish us luck. I also have to stand up in front of a handful of people and give a speech in japanese -- a language I've mostly forgotten how to speak. I hope you guys are rooting for me. I need your roots.

Didn't really have time to color here. In fact, I might not be coloring them for a while now since I'm so busy -- but hey, you still get to look at some comics. Right here. Right now (and a week from right now).

Friend Justin came to me and told me that all of the students are complaining about Trayless Tuesdays at the dining hall, so I decided to do this comic. But the fact is that I think Trayless Tuesdays are an awesome idea: everyone stuffs those trays up and then puts them on the dirty tray rack wasting tons of uneaten food, not to mention the tray-washing water. I don't know why they don't just rid the cafeteria of trays entirely.

Or, you know, people could eat real food at home! Like me!

Here's a girl I've been working on. Eventually she'll have clothes and eyes and hair (and better eyebrows), but for now I'm just trying to make her skin look real. Still need to do maps for scattering strength and specular, but I learned a lot of cool stuff today and I'm actually enjoying working on her textures.

This weekend I went to a Jungle themed party, where some friends and I devised a new dance move. The "Get the Hell Out of My Way" is sure to be a hit on the club scene and it's oh-so-perfect for dance offs. New rival Jeremy and I did laps around the floor with it as well as the crab walk and some backwards dancing, and I think we each now acknowledge the other as the victor of what was a funky-fierce foray.

So there you have it. I'm both cute and modest.

Hey, did you guys check out buttercup festival today?! Did you read the little update blurb?! If you did and you were feeling a little bit link clicky, you might have wound up watching my Animation 1 final! Crazy. I can't believe that I made that 2 years ago and today I woke up and found the comic artist who inspired it linking right over to it! I was drinking coffee at the time. If it had been in my mouth at that very moment, I probably would have spit it out all over my laptop.

School is getting really crazy. Senior project is really starting to pick up, and it's sucking a lot of my time away from the development of my personal site. I also found out that I didn't get into the JET program, so I guess I'll have to do a lot of thinking about my future that I was hoping to put off.

All excuses aside, I just plain missed two deadlines for radstronomical this week. One was the site I just mentioned, the other was updating yesterday. So I'll update today, and get back to the site as soon as I can make up some ground on Senior Project and figure out as3/xml. Drew this week's comic in flash...

A Break in Review

Two weeks with no updates? God, I'm a jerk.

Frankly, there wasn't a lot to update about beyond the minutia of my life over break. We're back though, and I just finished a comic for next week which is a bit different than those we've seen. We'll see how it goes.

Man, being on break was great. I think I watched an average of two movies a day, and I also made ramen with the guys. I don't have the pictures with me, but one of these weeks I'll try and put a few up. We also made chocolate chipotle cookies (which I shamefully admit was a Rachel Ray episode), and they came out flat... but delicious. Maybe I'll give them their own post later.

It's so weird not being in school. How do I know when to update my blog?

Now that I think of it... what do I update it with? Well, here's what I've been thinking.

I'm not crazy about the design of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs based on this first image. Sony had better be careful messing around with one of my favorite kids' books like that. I guess it's a modern adaptation and hey, why shouldn't it be? But still...

Aaron recommended I watch the original Journey to the Center of the Earth film (available on netflix instant watch), and boy papi was he on to something. It's one hundred per cent awesome, with dimetrodons and crystals and beautiful, beautiful science. I don't sleep. I hate those little slices of death.

It's almost Christmas! You should see how nice my banana tree looks with its lights and candy canes and single panda bear ornament. I'm a real champ when it comes to holiday spirit. I don't really have anything else to say... working on this or that in my head but nothing concrete is going on yet. I'm pretty excited to start on my senior project. The group and I cooked up some real neat stuff.

I was surprised to find a little preview of this on the front page of the paper. That was nice of them, wasn't it? Special thanks to Lauren for actually having received this compliment.

Radstronomical Gastronomicals 2: Happy Franksgiving

You may already know that my friends and I enjoy puns. We knew we had to cook something over Thanksgiving break, so the day after we got down to business and were finally able to celebrate our favorite unofficial holiday: Franksgiving. Don't forget to check back next week for a new comic.

Just hot dogs would have been a little bit boring, so Sam put his brainmeats to work and soon we had our Franksgiving Feast. Pretzel Dogs. If you want to follow along, please find the recipe we used here. Please excuse the topless children.

The best part about making pretzel dogs was that we already had all of the ingredients except for the enormous hot dogs we would use. So after making Mike wait at Aaron's for an hour and a half without us, we all got there and dug in. The first step was to dissolve the yeast in some warm water. Kirk really dove right in and got that one going. Good job, Kirk.

After letting the yeast do its thing for a little while, it was time to mix in the dry ingredients and create ourselves some pretzel dough. Aaron used his baking experience to mix the dough up by hand. Of course he did a terrible job, but after adding not enough water and then too much and then cleaning it up with some extra flour, he did alright. He probably should have considered having a beard like everyone else.

Next Kirk stepped in again to get his roll on, as Sam and Mike belittled his poor rolling form. This part was a little bit confusing since the recipe offered two batch sizes but only one size to roll the dough to, but we came through alright in the end. After rolling it until it was about 1/2" deep we were ready to fashion ourselves some mother-damn pretzels.

Using a pizza cutter, we sliced the dough into strips. After wrapping our quarter-pound frankies in their respective blankies we found ourselves with some extra dough, so we made some more fun shapes (some not suitable for children). Our mouths were starting to water.

Before the pretzels could bake they needed to take a nice warm bath in some baking soda and boiling water so they would get that pretzelian exterior. This part was a little bit tricky since it made the dough soggy, and some of our wrappers and shapes took some serious damage. Kirk and Mike had left to get some milkshakes so Sam, Aaron and I were left alone at the helm. After the bath, they received a peppering of coarse salt (get it? seasoning joke).

The Franks went into the oven, and the smell of pretzels and hot dogs warmed our little hearts as we got ready to watch some quality movies.

Franknasty -- in the positive sense

The franks came out looking about as delicious as we had expected, and taste-tests confirmed our suspicions. It would be a lie to say that the pretzels couldn't have used a flip during cook time, but they were still unbelievably delicious. Even mace-wielding pretzel jesus came through. Because we ended up with a bit of uncooked pretzel I won't give this effort a radstronomical, but we were damn close.

Final Rating: Totally Rad

So spread the word: the day after thanksgiving is no longer the day they put the Christmas lights up. It's Franksgiving.

Thanksgiving is that one where you eat things

It's been a crazy week, but I am all applied to JET and everything. I've watched a lot of great movies recently, Including "Boy A," "Paranoid Park," and "The Bad Sleep Well." I recommend looking into them. I also watched Stephen Chow's latest, "Cj7," which was a pretty big let down.

I hope that everyone has a nice Thanksgiving. There's no Triangle issue this week, so there won't be a comic posted on Monday, but I'll try and come up with something nice to show you.

Prepare for rant.

I love Philadelphia. I was born just a short distance outside the city and I spent many a youthful Sunday getting dim sum in Chinatown, and spend many a Sunday exploring other parts of the city now. One of my most absurd memories involves my dad almost driving us down the art museum steps. This city has helped shaped my being, and I have little to no desire to leave it.

This past week has only strengthened my affection for what I now consider my home. the Phillies won, my friend Ali put on a great show, we had an amazing halloween, the world's largest piñata was constructed and, most excitingly, I and many others poured onto broad street to celebrate the election of our next president: Barack Obama. So many high fives were exchanged. It was an unbelievable week to be in the city of Philadelphia.

But in all honesty, what the hell? We waited 28 years to win the world series and we celebrated by turning over peoples' cars, tearing down the city's property, and starting fires. This is all behavior that wouldn't be appropriate even if things were going well, but this country -- no, forget the country -- this city, is in the middle of an extreme economic depression. Public pools and libraries are being closed all over the city and people are losing their jobs. I almost didn't publish this comic because it feels a little passive aggressive and a little bit juvenile, but I think it's absurd the way people acted and the way that, on the day after, they bragged about the careless destruction they took part in as if to say that because a team that they supported (and only because, for once, they were doing well) won the world series, they were somehow above everything else -- including the fans just like them whose property they destroyed and whose wallets they emptied.

Anyway, that's enough of that. Next week's comic will please all of those dudes out there waiting for dating advice!!

Ah, back again at last.

Maybe I spoke too soon about last week's warmness. On Wednesday I went outside and had a really nice time studying Japanese in the spring-like weather. I even met some new friends by way of the tiny puppy they were babysitting.

That being said, it's cold again and I am wearing a sweater today, and I like that. This week I read Chris Ware's "Jimmy Corrigan, The Smartest Kid on Earth" and I adored it. I want to read it again or something. I also went fishing on friday and caught three keepers, one of which I made up for some friends and myself last night. It was delicious.

Fall Fells Summer

Here we are, on beautiful October 6th. It's gotten quite brisk outside and I'm sipping on a pumpkin spice latte and craving terrible horror movies; It's finally fall. I'll try to work that into my next comic somehow, but the one that's due today doesn't really lend itself to such things. I recommend you embrace fall rather than fear winter, my loyal readers. This weekend I popped over to an orchard with my brother, picked some apples, and made so many delicious pastries that I questioned if I would ever want one again. I would, and it would be for breakfast this morning. Fall is hardcore.

I also carved a pumpkin, which I'll try to give some documentation of later.
